Hundreds Screened For Kidney Disease on World Kidney Day
at The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center
In honor of World Kidney Day, The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center partnered with the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois to promote prevention of kidney diseases. Free eye screenings and health screenings for diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney disease were provided.
During the event, Illinois Sectary of State Jessie White encouraged people to sign up for the organ and tissue donor program. Alderman Carrie Austin of the 34th Ward shared her daughter’s battle with kidney disease and touched on the importance of kidney disease screenings and the importance of becoming an organ donor. Other special guest speakers included Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health and Danny Perez, a brave advocate for the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois who is currently battling kidney disease.
Patrons were given the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session with University of Chicago’s Dr. Tipu Puri, a kidney specialist. Charlotte Lyons, cookbook author and former food editor, provided healthy cooking demonstrations and food tastings. The Kroc Fitness Center held a Zumba demonstration and boot camp workout demonstration. Tastings
Additional sponsors including Chicago Family Health Center, Illinois Eye Institute, Davita, Gift of Hope and Walgreens provided health information and services to the community.
“The Kroc family is open to help start health initiatives in the community and it was great to partner with the National Kidney Foundation to give members access to these screenings,” said Major David Harvey, Senior Kroc Administrator. “This event has helped our members learn about themselves and will help them reach their goals in the Kroc Fitness Center. We believe diabetes and obesity will decline in our community because of these ventures such as this one.”
March is National Kidney Month. According to the National Kidney Foundation, 1 in 3 American adults is at-risk for kidney disease. The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center is proud to partner with the National Kidney Foundation to help promote awareness and prevention of kidney disease to the community.

Innovative Body-Heat-Activated and Color Changing Golf Training Aid
Chip Beck, PGA Tour four time winner, recently introduced Grip Guides, an innovative body-heat-activated and color changing golf training aid to golf program site coordinators and Kroc members at The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center.
The Kids Golf Foundation of Illinois hosted the training session, where Beck, developer of Grip Guides, provided his golf expertise and demonstrated how the Grip Guides are a great learning instrument for children to perfect their golf swing. After the demonstration, site coordinators and Kroc members tested the Grip Guides and received golf swinging pointers from Beck.
“It was a great opportunity for PGA golfer Chip Beck to spend time with our invited guests and Kroc members to go over golf swinging techniques and promote the Grip Guides,” said Thaddeus Moody, The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center outdoor sports manager. “It’s great for Kroc members to experience and take advantage of our exclusive workshops and golf classes.”
The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center offers Children Golf Academy and Golf Clinic for adults and seniors. Both programs provide access to the best coaches, innovative golf training techniques and give participants the tools needed to approach the game with a clear head, a strong body and a confident swing.
