Salvation Army and Marshfield Plaza Christmas Event on December 3.

On Saturday, December 3, The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps partnered with the Marshfield Plaza again this year to hold a free, day-long Christmas celebration for area families. Children in the Kroc Center Youth Band and the Evergreen Park Middle School band performed for shoppers, while others visited Santa in his Holiday Workshop, rode the holiday trolley and enjoyed holiday craft activities. Children were also invited to paint and decorate a tile depicting what activities they want to participate in at the Kroc Center. The finished tiles will form a mosaic for the art room of the completed Kroc Center.

Funds for the tile project were generously donated by Marshfield Plaza, along with mall space to host the festive event. Marshfield Plaza also collected gifts for The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program and donated canned goods to help feed the hungry.

Higgins Community Academy Students Tour United Center and Meet Forward Sidney Green
December, 2011

In December, The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps and Higgins Community
Academy took 30 students on a tour of the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls. During the tour, the students met former Chicago Bulls star Sidney Green and Tony Rokita, Senior Manager of Community Relations, who talked to the students about the importance of hard work and having a dream.

The United Center Tour and Chicago Bulls meet and greet was offered as an incentive to students for improving their grades and performance in school. The tour was a reward and a reinforcement of the importance of making school a top priority.

The future Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center complex will include an indoor
contest gymnasium and outdoor courts for recreational and competitive basketball sponsored by the Chicago Bulls.

Salvation Army Girl Guards Earn Cake Decorating Emblem
October 18, 2011

Salvation Army Girl Guards Earn Cake Decorating Emblem

More than 20 Salvation Army Girl Guards earned their Cake Decorating Emblem on Tuesday, October 18.

Organized by Salvation Army Cadet Pamela Kasten, the girls learned about icing tips and edible decorations and then decorated their very own cupcakes. The Cake Decorating Emblem helped the girls develop their artistic skills while teaching them about an exciting career opportunity.

Over the past four years, enrollment in Salvation Army character building programs such as Girl Guards has steadily increased. Many Girl Guards have been involved in character building since the Kroc Corps first opened, starting out in the program’s predecessor, Sunbeams.
